Title Bristlenose Pleco (Ancistrus cirrhosus)

Tanner Crawford

Last Updated

A profile of the bristlenose pleco: An oddity with character

The bristlenose pleco (Ancistrus cirrhosus) is a freshwater bottom feeder that is commonly found in the aquarium hobby. These fish are usually sold as juveniles at 1-2" and have a max size of about 6" inches. They are unique due to their reletively small size for members of the Ancistrus family. They are commonly found in natural dark brown and black, but are also availible in albino and red forms. The distinct bristles around the head of the male distinguish them from many other forms of pleco, while the females generally have bristles to the side of their heads around their gill plates that are usually only shown when distressed. They are know to eat a large amount of plant matter and consume foods such as Spirulina Sinking Wafers (OSI4996) to retain nutrients for proper growth. The bristlenose pleco enjoys a large amount of plant cover but can damage or destroy plants if they are too weak. Strengthening the roots of plants with Flourish Tabs (SC2390) and plenty of cover such as the Ceramic Castle with wire mesh (AZ2013) that plants can also be attached to for more coverage. The bristlenose plecos are known for the large number of offspring they can produce. They can have several hundred young at a time from cave spawning in ornaments or pots. A Tank Divider (PP1141) might be neccessary to keep other tank occupants from eating the young. These fish are a great addition to any tank that lacks a powerful bottom feeder.
